Arab African International Bank (AAIB)

Arab African International Bank (AAIB) UAE Review

Best Bank for the Egypt–UAE Corridor?

★★★★☆
3,8 / 5

Editor’s Verdict for AAIB UAE

Arab African International Bank operates as a niche but well-established relationship bank in the UAE, with deep roots in Egypt and the broader Arab region. Founded in 1964 in Cairo as a joint venture between the Central Bank of Egypt and the Kuwait Investment Authority, AAIB expanded into the UAE in 1970, becoming the first Egyptian private-sector bank to enter the Gulf. Today AAIB UAE is regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE and runs a compact two-branch network – Dubai (Al Wasl) and Abu Dhabi (Al Khalidiya) – with a strong focus on corporate, institutional, and selective retail clients, particularly within the Egyptian and Arab expat communities. The parent group reported total assets of around USD 19,1 billion as of March 2026.

✓ Best For

  • Egyptian expats and Arab nationals who regularly remit funds to AAIB Egypt accounts in EGP (free outward transfers from personal accounts)
  • SMEs and corporates trading across the Egypt–UAE corridor that need correspondent banking depth
  • Priority and Wealth segment clients who want a dedicated relationship manager rather than a call-centre script
  • UAE residents based in Dubai or Abu Dhabi who do not need a dense branch and ATM network
  • Treasurers and finance teams using SWIFT MT940 / MT950 statement feeds

✗ Not Ideal For

  • Customers expecting a branch in Sharjah, Ajman, RAK, Fujairah, or Umm Al Quwain – AAIB has no physical presence there
  • Digital-first users who want app-only onboarding, cashback cards, and gamified savings
  • Freelancers and low-balance corporate clients – the corporate minimum balance is AED 30 000
  • Anyone chasing aggressive credit card rewards, miles, or lounge programmes
  • Clients from sanctioned jurisdictions or operating in gold, gas, oil, real estate, gambling, or adult entertainment

AAIB UAE Popular Products

Personal Current Account

Most Popular

Who it’s for: UAE, GCC nationals, and resident expats above the age of 18 with a valid residence visa.

The current account is available in AED or major foreign currencies, with a minimum monthly balance of AED 3 000 and a fall-below charge of AED 25 per month. Account opening is free, the relationship fee is free, the first chequebook of 10 leaves is free on request, and the debit card is issued free on first request. AED cash deposits and withdrawals at the counter are free.

Watch out: Four returned cheques within a 12-month period will trigger automatic account closure under UAE Central Bank rules. Returned cheques may also negatively impact your Al Etihad Credit Bureau record.

Savings Account

For Savers

The savings account is open to individuals of all ages (for minors, guardianship of the father or a legally appointed guardian is required). It is available in AED or major foreign currencies, with a minimum balance of AED 3 000.

The product currently offers an annual interest rate of 0,2%, credited in June and December each year. A complimentary AED debit card is issued on first request for account holders above 18. There is a AED 25 monthly charge if the minimum balance is not maintained, and AED 100 if you close the account within 6 months of opening.

Reality check: The headline rate is modest – this product is best treated as a parking account for AED liquidity rather than a yield-driven savings strategy.

Fixed Deposits & Green Pearls

Yield

AAIB UAE offers conventional Fixed Deposits in AED and major foreign currencies, with negotiable tenors and interest rates set at booking. Early withdrawal results in loss of accrued interest.

Green Pearls is AAIB’s themed deposit product, marketed as part of the bank’s sustainable finance positioning. As with the standard FD, breaking the deposit during its tenor leads to interest rate adjustments and potential loss of yield.

Watch out: Always confirm the booking rate, tenor, and break-clause in writing. AAIB UAE notifies customers 60 days in advance of any change to product features, fees, or T&Cs, so keep your contact details on file up to date.

Corporate Account & Trade Finance

Best for SMEs

Who it’s for: LLCs, Free Zone, and UAE-registered offshore companies, especially those with regular flows between the UAE and Egypt.

The corporate current account requires AED 30 000 (or FCY equivalent) as the minimum monthly balance, with a fall-below fee of AED 315 and a recurring relationship fee of AED 105 per month. The first 25 cheque leaves are free, AED cash transactions below AED 250 000 are free, and the bank supports WPS salary file processing at AED 63 per file plus AED 1,05 per beneficiary.

Outward AED transfers within the UAE cost AED 36,75, SWIFT transfers outside the UAE start at AED 105 plus AED 157,5 correspondent charges on an “OUR” basis, and transfers to AAIB Egypt in EGP cost AED 52,5. Trade finance, documentary credits, and MT940 / MT950 statement feeds are part of the corporate proposition.

Trade-off: Onboarding is document-heavy and personal presence by the shareholder is required at one of the two UAE branches.

AAIB UAE Hidden Fees & Charges

Most “surprise” charges at AAIB UAE come from foreign currency cash handling, corporate minimum balances, and correspondent banking fees on international transfers. The schedule below is based on the official AAIB UAE Tariff and Charges, effective September 2024:

Minimum Balance Fee (Personal)
AED 25 / month
Applies if the monthly average balance drops below AED 3 000 on a personal current or savings account. No monthly relationship fee on personal accounts.
Minimum Balance Fee (Corporate)
AED 315 / month
Applies if the balance drops below AED 30 000 on a corporate account. Charged in addition to the recurring AED 105 monthly relationship fee – costs add up quickly for inactive entities.
Foreign Currency Cash Deposit / Withdrawal
2% + VAT
Two percent of the transaction amount plus VAT on FCY cash at the counter. A USD 10 000 cash withdrawal costs roughly AED 735 plus VAT – move money by transfer where possible.
Outward International Transfer (Personal)
AED 105 + correspondent fees
SWIFT transfer to banks outside the UAE costs AED 105 plus around AED 157,5 correspondent charges if you select “OUR”. Outward transfer in EGP to AAIB Egypt is free for personal accounts.
Cheque Returned Drawn on the Account (Personal)
AED 157,5
Per returned cheque, with regulatory consequences in the UAE. Four returned cheques in 12 months will cause the bank to close your account. Corporate clients face AED 420 per returned cheque.
Early Account Closure (Personal)
AED 100
Applies if you close your personal account within six months of opening. Free once the account is older than six months. Corporate closure costs AED 420.
International ATM Cash Withdrawal
AED 21 / transaction
Per withdrawal outside the GCC, plus any host-country charges. GCC ATM withdrawals cost AED 6,30. Use of AAIB ATMs in the UAE is free.
SWIFT MT940 / MT950 Statement Feed
AED 210 setup + AED 210 / month
Per account, per month for the outgoing SWIFT statement feed. Relevant for corporate treasurers integrating bank statements into TMS or ERP systems.

Digital Experience

AAIB Mobile App

Primarily Egypt market

The AAIB Mobile app is a feature-rich product in the Egypt market, supporting card management, instant transfers, bill payments, and beneficiary management. In the UAE, app functionality is more limited and many service requests still route through the branch or the 24/7 call centre on 800 2242.

What works well: Stable internet banking at e.aaib.com for transfers and statements, MT940 / MT950 SWIFT statement delivery for corporate clients, free internal transfers between own accounts, and free transfers to AAIB Egypt accounts in EGP from personal accounts.

What frustrates users: No fully online onboarding for new-to-bank UAE customers, limited self-service for product changes (cards must be collected in branch), and no Arabic interface in UAE online banking.

Online Banking

The UAE online banking portal at e.aaib.com covers day-to-day operations – balance inquiry, statements, internal transfers, and SWIFT transfers. It is English-only and functional rather than modern. Complex tasks such as account amendments, mandate changes, and complaints still require branch visits, email to complaints_uae@aaib.com, or a call to 800 2242.

You need to visit either the Dubai (Al Wasl) or Abu Dhabi (Al Khalidiya) branch in person with your original passport, Emirates ID, valid residence visa, proof of address (recent utility bill, tenancy contract, or property ownership document), proof of income, and a completed application form. Approval typically takes 3 to 5 business days for straightforward personal applications.

Can non-residents open an AAIB UAE account?

AAIB UAE primarily opens accounts for UAE residents and locally registered entities (LLCs, Free Zone, and UAE-registered offshore companies). Non-resident retail account opening is limited and handled case by case at the bank’s discretion. Citizens of Russia, Sudan, Iran, Syria, Cuba, Venezuela, and North Korea are not onboarded.

What is the minimum balance at AAIB UAE?

AED 3 000 for personal current and savings accounts, and AED 30 000 for corporate accounts, on a monthly average basis. Breach fees are AED 25 per month for personal accounts and AED 315 per month for corporate accounts.

Does AAIB offer free transfers to Egypt?

Yes. Outward transfers in Egyptian Pounds from a personal AAIB UAE account to any AAIB Egypt account are free. From a corporate account, the same transfer costs AED 52,5. This is one of the bank’s strongest differentiators for clients on the Egypt–UAE corridor.

What is the AAIB UAE SWIFT code?

The Dubai Head Office uses ARAIAEAD (8 characters) or ARAIAEADXXX (11 characters). The Abu Dhabi branch uses ARAIAEADAUH. Use the branch-specific code where possible to speed up routing. The full list is available at bank-uae.com/aaib-swift-code.

How long do international transfers take from AAIB UAE?

SWIFT transfers typically settle within 1 to 3 business days, depending on the destination country, intermediary banks, and currency cut-off times. Same-day value FCY transfers may attract additional charges. Transfers in EGP to AAIB Egypt are usually credited the same business day.

How do I close my AAIB UAE account?

Visit the branch where the account was opened, settle all outstanding amounts (loans, credit cards, fees), surrender unused chequebooks and cards, and sign the closure form. Closure costs AED 100 if the personal account is younger than 6 months, and is free once the account is older than 6 months. Corporate account closure costs AED 420.

What should I do if my AAIB debit card is lost or stolen?

Call 800 2242 inside the UAE (or +202 19555 from outside the UAE) immediately to block the card. Visit a branch with your Emirates ID to request a replacement – the replacement fee is AED 26,25. Review your recent transactions and dispute any suspicious activity in writing through complaints_uae@aaib.com.

Are there AAIB branches in Sharjah, Ajman, RAK, Fujairah, or Umm Al Quwain?

No. AAIB UAE operates only two branches – one in Dubai (DNI Building, Al Wasl, on Sheikh Zayed Road) and one in Abu Dhabi (Kamala Tower, Al Khalidiya). Customers in other emirates use online banking at e.aaib.com, the 24/7 call centre on 800 2242, and the wider UAE ATM network for cash access.

Is AAIB UAE regulated and safe?
